Famous Choreographers In India


One of the most sensational choreographers for the youths of this country is Shaimak Davar. He was a born to dance personality and having a good command over Contemporary dance style. He is the first person who brought contemporary Jazz dance into the Indian Cinema and other western dances through his dance class academy, SDIPA. The very good achievement for Davar is that he choreographed in the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne and in Delhi both. He also choreographed to Tom Cruise for his latest flick Mission Impossible 4.

Shaimak Davar is one of the prominent choreographers who choreographed various Film start and other celebrities. He choreographed various dance performances during the IIFA Awards, Filmfares and other award functions. Various celebrities and actors including Shahid Kapoor, Darsheel Safary, Ruslan Mumtaz are also the part of Dance academy of Shaimak Davar and they get their dancing sessions from him in his academy.

 

He received the Best Choreographer Award for Dil To Pagal Hai in the year 1998. He also won Lycra(R) MTV Style Awards for Dhoom Again in the movie Dhoom 2 under the category of most stylish song in a film. The impact of his dance was in London as he received Doctorate from the Middlesex University, London for his contribution the world of entertainment not only in India but in other parts of the world.

 

Prabhu Deva

Prabhudeva is one of the Indian Dancer who received large number of appreciation for his dances. He is the choreographer cum actor and acted in various Hindi and South Indian Movies. He is also a well known director. The basic fact about him is that he does not stick to one dance form and he changes his styles to different dance forms. His idol is Michael Jackson and he goes the label of Indian Michael Jackson.

He choreographed for the first time in the movie Vetri Vizha which was released in 1989. prior to this film, he also appeared as a background dancer in Agni Natchathiram. From that time, he choreographed in more than centuries of movies. He also showed his acting skills apart from his choreographing image. He did it for the first time in 1994 released Indhu. He was having Roja opposite to him. The big glory for him was in 1999 when Prabhu Deva with A R Rehman and Shobhna performed at a concert naming Michael Jackson and Friends in Munich. He performed with a dancing troop from Tamil Cinema. He served with high quality dances to South Indian Film Industry and he is having a great affection towards those industries. He also acted with his brothers in 123. He also directed various hit films that include Wanted with Salman Khan in 2009. It was the spectacular hit of that year and it also gave certain new dancing steps to Salman Khan as well. Currently he is acting in the film Any Body Can Dance which is expected to release at the end of 2012.

 

Farah Khan

One of the greatest choreographers from the olden times is Farah Khan. She is and Indian film director and famous choreographer. She is known as the best choreographer in most of the Hindi Films. The very amazing fact about her is that she choreographed over hundred songs in the 80 films and she is known as the talented director as well. She also did some international projects like Perhaps Love, Marigold, Monsoon Wedding and many more.

 

 

Saroj Khan

Saroj Khan is better known as Nirmala Kishanchand Sadhu Singh Nagpal. She is one of the most sensational choreographers of her time and given various steps that are in trend today as well. Her talent of choreography was seen in 200 Indian movies. The difference in her name is because she was born to a Hindu family and was married to a Muslim bride.

 

 

 

Ganesh Hegde

Among the other choreographers, one is Ganesh Hegde who is an Indian video director, singer, and performer. He was born in Mumbai. He got his popularity from the work that he done in the movie Lagaan which was nominated to Oscar as well. He also received popularity for his Item Song in Company. He is a better choreographer and directed for various stage shows and award functions. He choreographed various talented and renowned actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherji, Priety and Arjun Rampal.

He also chorteographed the dances in the Zee Cine Awards and he is also choreographing during the Filmfare from the very long time as well. The very popular choreographing done by Ganesh Hegde was Its Magic from the movie Koi Mil Gaya and Main Hoon Na from the movie with the same title. He also did successful choreography in the Chammak Chalo song from Ra One and from various other movies too.

 

Lachhu Maharaj

The real choreographer for traditional dances was Lachhu Maharaj. He was a well known dancer for Kathak Dance form which is a traditional dance form of Lucknow. He also got trained under Pt. Binadin Maharaj. His family was also engage in the same dance form. He received his training from that person who was the court for a decade at the Nawab of Awadh and his uncle. He was also having mastery in Tabla and Pakhawaj which are the Indian classical musical forms. He came to Mumbai after sometime. The industry helped him and he emerged as the perfect Kathak dancer and shown his skills to various kinds of audiences. He won appreciation from the audience for his choreography in the movies like Mahal, Pakeezah, Mughal-e-Azam and many more. He also established a Kathak Academy with the collaboration of Uttar Pradesh Government in the state capital, Lucknow. He also received prestigious awards and Sangeet Natak Academy Awards.

 

Remo D'Souza

Remo D’Souza is a well known choreographer cum director cum dancer. His main passion is towards choreography and he is one of the best choreographers in the Indian film industry. He also contributed through his work in the Bengali film industry as well. Apart from his choreography, he is also a judge in a reality dance show, Jhalak Dikhla Ja with Madhuri Dixit and Karan Johar. Apart from his passion towards choreography, he also directed on film in 2011, FALTU, in which he shown various different dance steps to the people. That film was a successful film of that year.

Currently,Remo is working with his first 3D dance film project Any Body Can Dance, in which he is casting various actors like Salman Khan, Prabhu Deva and various other junior actors. The name of the movie is suggested by Terrence Lewis.

 

Terence Lewis

Terence Lewis is one of the master choreographers of the country and he is trained in various international and Indian styles of dances like folk, classical and non classical and many more. He is the choreographer in bollywood films and in other musical shows. He also choreographed the popular celebrities and actors. The list of his servings is not small or limited, it goes out of it in various areas including, feature films, brands and promotions, stage shows, award shows, corporate launches and other areas where dance and music are important. Apart from choreographing in the national events, he also performed and won various international stage shows as well. He won American Choreography Award for his excellence in this field. He also patched up with other choreographers too so that he can provide sensational moves to the actors. He choreographed in the movie Lagaan with Ganesh Hegde, Saroj Khan, Raju Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant.

Apart from having a great specialty of dancing and choreographing, he also judged and remains as the mentor for Dance India Dance all seasons that was aired on Zee TV. He also gave some special appearances in other dancing reality shows. He also represented Asia in the International Choreographers Meet and other events on the same context around the world. He is also teaching the Bollywood dance style to the students in Austria from the past 5 years.

 

Vaibhavi Merchant

Vaibhavi Merchant is the dancer cum choreographer in Bollywood and is being active in this profession from a very long time. Her family background also belongs to te same field as her grandfather, B. Hiralal was a choreographer and her sister Shruti Merchant is also a choreographer. She began her career as an actor but came back to follow her passion of dancing and choreographing.

She choreographed in the hit song a decade ago, Dhol Baje from the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, casting Aishvarya Rai as the main lead of this song. She also worked in the Oscar nominated movie, Lagaan with other successful choreographers. Apart from all these things, she also choreographed most prestigious songs in the films like Devdas, Veer Zaara, Baghban, Dhoom, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and many more. She received an award for her appreciated work in the movie Bunty Aur Babli for the song, Kajra re.
